Arsenal endured an unimpressive season under Unai Emery. The season started with back to back defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea. The Gunners picked up the pieces and enjoyed an unbeaten run in the next 22-games and it looked as though they will end the season on a high. Alas, the London capitulated in the League and ended the season trophyless. Towards the end of league, we managed only 4 points from 18, after suffering defeats from mid table clubs like Crystal Palace, Everton, and Leicester City.
There were times when the managers tactics was called into the question. He was always tinkering with his selection and formation. As long as he continues at the club, the Spanish manager must stick to a tactics and not always rotate his squad. Pundits have made a case for the quality of personnel Emery has but besides that, there is a terrible culture and mentality at the club that must be erased – they feel at ease even in defeat and they are not hungry and desperate for success.
While we expect to see new players come into the squad this summer, the club must be bold enough to scrap some players off their squad.
The German signed for Arsenal from Valencia in 2016 but he has in no way improved the backline of the club under Wenger and Emery. He is prone to mistakes and lacks the presence of a brick wall centre-half. Although he is relatively young, he presents a major liability for Arsenal and they must cash in on him else his value will continue to depreciate.
Rob Holding is a hope for us but whatever money gotten from the sale of Mustafi can be reinvested in the same position. We have seen that the Liverpool investment in Van Dijk has paid off and we need same.
When he arrived Arsenal six years ago, it looked like we are a club with ambition that can attract mega stars. No doubt Ozil has proven his mettle as one of the best passers of the ball over time but somehow, this player has lost it. Maybe the manager is failing to utilise and take advantage of his genius but he is currently the biggest liability at the club given his bogus wage bill. Under Wenger, Ozil and Sanchez made a very good combination – although he was criticized then but not as much as under Emery. There are younger players that would offer more. Arsenal must do everything to get him off their books this summer.
