Has Harry Maguire Fared Better Than Chris Smalling At Manchester United?

Former Leicester City defender Harry Maguire created a new record by becoming the world’s most expensive defender when he completed his huge £80m move to the Old Trafford Stadium prior to the start of the season.

Many Manchester United fans were furious with the club’s decision to spend such massive amount on a player who hasn’t proven himself in any top-four team all his career.

The did has already been done, the fans had no other option but to pray that the former Sheffield United defender lives up to his billing.

Maguire’s move to Old Trafford didn’t just create a new record for transfer price tag, but equally pushed Chris Smalling further down the pecking order at the Theatre of Dreams.

The English centre-back was eventually loaned out to Serie A side Roma before the start of the season so as to prevent the club from paying an underused player.

21 matches into the season, Maguire has blown hot and cold, and he has somewhat failed to justify his price tag.

Though it will be unfair to say that the former Foxes player has been a total failure, his performance is far below what was expected from him prior to the season.

He has failed to play a leadership role at the back and that is having a very negative impact on the team’s confidence level.

United have conceded 25 Premier League goals despite Maguire’s presence at the heart of the defence – although he is currently sidelined with injury. The 26-year-old defender is equally not a threat from set-pieces as he has no goal for the club.

Unlike Harry Maguire, Smalling is fast becoming a hero in Roma’s shirt having scored two goals in 11 League matches.

His reputation continues to grow so much that the Serie A side are set to seal a deal with United to have him permanently in January.

Judging by the players’ display so far, it won’t be out of place to say that Maguire hasn’t fared better than Chris Smalling at Old Trafford, and he need to up his game as soon as possible.

Red Bull Salzburg striker Erling Haaland is due to arrive Manchester today in a bid to secure a move to Manchester United, reports Skysports.

Despite allowing two attackers in Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to leave last summer, United did not sign any out-and-out forward in their stead and they look a tad thin in that area.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been open about his desire to fortify his front-line and it appears that the 19-year-old Norwegian striker has tickled his fancy.

“We are looking to strengthen in many positions.

“We are getting there but we still need two or three players to have enough numbers.” Solskjaer said after United win against  Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Haaland moved to Salzburg in the summer of 2018 from Molde and his stock has increased since then. He has scored 16 goals in 14 League appearances for his side this season and has attracted interested from United.

Although Solskjaer has played down speculations linking Haaland with a move to United, Sky sports have reported that he’s on his way to Manchester to complete a move.

When deal is done, the player would have reunited with his compatriot Solskjaer, who was his boss at Molde for two years.

We take a look at the squad number available for Haaland at Man United.

The prolific youngster dons the number 30 Shirt for Red Bulls Salzburg. He will likely take the same since it is available or go for another.

Since the number shirt has been given to Anthony Martial, he could be handed the number 19 shirt as well.

Marcus Rashford vacated the number 11 Shirt, that is also available for the taking of Haaland.

Number 7 is also reserved but reports have claimed Jadon Sancho, who is firmly on the radar of United could take that in place of Alexis Sanchez
