Man United in pole position to sign in-demand defender, agent spotted in Town

Manchester City and Man United are reportedly after Saint-Etienne defender. Consequently, his agent has been spotted around Manchester as rumours keep igniting, according to Manchester Evening News.

William Saliba who broke into Saint-Etienne’s first team this season has been the subject of the rumour. The 18 year-old was a vital part of the team that finished fourth in the recently concluded French Ligue 1 season.

Manchester City are currently shopping around for a center back having freed former captain Vincent Kompany. The club will now be looking to bring in a long term solution. Therefore, signing an 18 year-old is a logical decision for the Citizens.

In a similar way but for a different reason, Manchester United are also looking to bring in a defender. For the Red Devils, however, they are looking for defence players who can adequately protect David de Gea and stop the backline from sinking.

The Old Trafford outfit conceded a total of 10 goals in the last five games of the previous season. It is obvious that they need to fix a leaky defence.

That said, Saliba is a versatile defence player who has been great in several positions including right back and centre back.

The player has also attracted interests from Arsenal whose manager Unai Emery wants the player at the club as fast as possible.

However, Saint-Etienne are seeking a particular deal that allows the purchasing club to buy with an option of spending a year on loan at the French side. At the moment, that deal is not suitable for Arsenal.

The player’s agent Djibril Niang has instead flown to Manchester to discuss terms with the Manchester neighbours and rivals.

It remains to be seen the direction of the negotiations.
