The Red Devils have offered Serie A giants Napoli £84m for their prized asset, according to reports emanating from Italy.
An Italian media publication Corrieredello Sport via Daily Mail claims that Manchester United are on the brink of making Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly the most expensive defender in the world.
Having missed out on a number of defenders in the past years, the Old Trafford outfit are ready to seal a deal this time.
United are not without competition, however. If they are to bring the Senegal international to England, they will have to battle it out with French side PSG.
The French Champions are also looking to deepen their squad and better their backline before the transfer window opens.
That said, it has also been revealed that Napoli’s President Auerelio de Laurentis is not likely to sell at any price below £89m. This means United will have to up their offer by a few millions if they are keen on signing the defender. Otherwise, they risk losing the player to PSG who also have more to offer the Senegalese in terms of Champions League football and titles.
It should be noted that Koulibaly has been a United target since the days of Jose Mourinho, and the club will do anything to have him this time around.
