Sadio Mane snubbed a move to Manchester United to join Liverpool, the player has revealed, according to reports.
Having established himself as top-notch attacker for Southampton, Mane was a subject of interest from top English clubs. He joined Liverpool from the Saints in the summer of 2016 in a £34 m, and he’s been able to justify every penny paid for his signing.
The 27-year-old player is enjoying the best form of his life – he ended the season as joint top scorer with teammate Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal. The Reds take on Tottenham tonight in the Champions league and they’ll be relying on Mane to bring on his A-game.
Speaking ahead of the Champions league final in Madrid, Mane revealed that he held talks with United for a potential move before he joined Liverpool.
Yes, I was really, really close because I even met up with them. So I was coming, I was there and I spoke with the boss who was there before (Van Gaal),’ Mane told the Mirror.
‘They made an offer, but in the same week, Klopp called me. He said: “I think it’s the right club. The right coach for me, and I think it’s better that I go to Liverpool’. For me I think it was the right time as well. I said, “I am going to Liverpool.”’
Mane is expected to join up with his compatriots for the African Cup of Nations after tonight’s game.
